Stand, 2009
A public art commission for the Shenkman Arts Centre,
Orleans, Ontario
The vividly coloured pattern
of the glass façade compliments the naturalistic elements incorporated
by the architects in the design of the building. Inspired by the stand
of trees that once graced the site,
the abstract design features the colours of leaves, blossoms, sky and wood.
As the levels of natural and
artificial light change through the day, so do the colours of the glass,
perpetually altering our reading of the artwork and the building. The
progression of the façade
from west to east introduces a theme of seasonal change, which echoes the
architectural space
from the studio wing to the exhibition and performance areas.
